Most small businesses are often careful about where to invest their marketing budget as every penny counts to ensure a return on investment. Social media marketing is becoming one of the most important aspects of digital marketing. It gives you some of the most cost-effective and versatile opportunities to reach your target audience and boost sales.

At first social media marketing can seem overwhelming and confusing. With so many platforms to choose from such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, and YouTube it is easy to get intimidated and push it to one side for another time.

However, social media can open up great opportunities for your business so we are here to help you get started! We have compiled a list of our most commonly asked social media questions with the answers that you might be dying to know.

By giving you the answers to the right questions, you can improve your chances of social media success and avoid costly mistakes with your marketing.

1. How often should I post?

It depends. Quality beats quantity, your goal is to get engaging and worthwhile content in front of your target audience.

It is better to post well thought out content than lots of nonsense that will get you no followers and no engagement. If that means you are only posting a couple of times per week – that is perfectly acceptable. Just make sure that you find a consistent schedule that you can maintain.

I’d suggest that you track what content is working for you and on what platform. Not every social media platform works well for every business. Once you’ve found the platforms that work for you, roll with it!

2. What's the best time to post?

Again, this depends. It is a case of trial and error. A good idea is to schedule your content at different times and days of the week. Then go back into your analytics platform and find which posts are getting the most engagement and interaction. This should then give you a pretty good idea of when is best to post for your audience on each platform.

3. How do I gain more followers?

You need to give your followers a reason to actually want to follower your account. You are looking for followers to engage with your content rather than being another follower that is meaningless to you.

Nowadays we are bombarded with content left right and centre, so why would your audience pay attention to your brand over the thousands of other brands? You have to give them a reason for wanting to follow you.

Some ideas could include sharing industry news and events, coupon deals and giveaways exclusively for your social media followers, sharing content that followers cannot see anywhere else is a great idea to build your following up.

4. Do I need to be on every social network?

No, it can be extremely tempting to increase your visibility by jumping on every social network there is.

By doing this you are just creating profiles for the sake of having a profile, get strategic with the networks you choose. Remember you don't have to take on everything at once, start out with one or two profiles. If you see success and have time to expand, then slowly add to other networks. But as I mentioned earlier just because your Facebook page is doing well doesn’t mean Twitter will give you the same results.

5. Do my social media handles have to be consistent?

By having consistent social media handles, it makes fans tagging you so much easier. It becomes very confusing when your handles are disjointed between networks, I can guarantee someone will post your Twitter handle on Facebook and you won't be able to avoid this – it means key opportunities to engage are missed!
